The Hate U Give

"The Hate U Give" is movie that very

accurately captures a lot of what people of color go through.

In the opening scene, the father is talking to his kids about how to handle run ins with the cops. He talks about how when he gets pulled over, he'll put his hands on the dashboard. "Now you keep your hands posted cause moving makes the police get all nervous." The little girl in the scene, who grows up into our main character, is nine at the time she hears this talk. "It can get real dangerous so don't argue with them, but keep your hands where they can see them," the dad continues.

This talk is one that a lot of people of color hear. Now it's not saying all cops are bad, but the fact of the matter is being black is seen as a weapon to some. In order to stay safe, people of color have to take extra precautions to show that they are not a threat.

Towards the end of the talk in the opening, the dad says "Don't you ever forget that being Black is an honor because you come from greatness." With how young the kids are, sometimes hearing the talk makes them wish they weren't black - life seems to be easier that way. But the dad does a good job of making sure they know they shouldn't want to change who they are. Yes we're different, but different in no way means wrong.

All of that takes place in just the first scene. There's a lot more to the movie that could help show what people of color go through. This is a good one to watch to get educated about some of these experiences.
